Posterior Sampling with Improved Eeciency

چکیده

The Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) technique provides a means to generate a random sequence of model realizations that sample the posterior probability distribution of a Bayesian analysis. That sequence may be used to make inferences about the model uncertainties that derive from measurement uncertainties. This paper presents an approach to improving the eeciency of the Metropolis approach to MCMC by incorporating an approximation to the covariance matrix of the posterior distribution. The covariance matrix is approximated using the update formula from the BFGS quasi-Newton optimization algorithm. Examples are given for uncorrelated and correlated multidimensional Gaussian posterior distributions.

Analysis of Proposals for Compliance and Enforcement Testing Under the New Part 431; Title 10, Code of Federal Regulations

Under section 431.24 of the DOE's Proposed Rule for compliance with EPCA, the manufacturer would determine the average full-load eeciency of each basic model of electric motor either by testing or by application of an Alternative EEciency Determination Method AEDM. Under section 431.127 of DOE's Proposed Rule for enforcement of EPCA, the DOE would ascertain, through an enforcement sampling plan...

A probabilistic framework for the adaptation and comparison of image codes

We apply a Bayesian method for inferring an optimal basis to the problem of nding eecient image codes for natural scenes. The basis functions learned by the algorithm are oriented and localized in both space and frequency, bearing a resemblance to Gabor functions, and increasing the number of basis functions results in a greater sampling density in position, orientation, and scale. These proper...

The Rao-blackwell Theorem in Stereology and Some Counterexamples

A version of the Rao-Blackwell theorem is shown to apply to most, but not all, stereological sampling designs. Estimators based on random test grids typically have larger variance than quadrat estimators; random s-dimensional samples are worse than random r-dimensional samples for s < r. Furthermore, the standard stereological ratio estimators of diierent dimensions are canonically related to e...

بررسی میزان همپوشانی دندان‌های خلفی در دو تکنیک Improved interproximal panoramic program و Standard panoramic

Background and Aims: Overlapping of the proximal surfaces of posterior teeth in the panoramic radiography is a major concern. Therefore, an option has been developed in the panoramic unit of Planmeca Promax, namely improved interproximal mode. This mode causes lower horizental angle with the teeth contact region during the unit rotation decreasing overlapping of the panoramic images of the post...

Importance Sampling for Monte Carlo Estimation of Quantiles

This paper is concerned with applying importance sampling as a variance reduction tool for computing extreme quantiles. A central limit theorem is derived for each of four proposed importance sampling quantile estimators. EEciency comparisons are provided in a certain asymptotic setting, using ideas from large deviation theory.
